This workshop will explore the genre of Screendance – the medium and its outcomes. Through set exercises and improvisations we will dance with and for the moving camera, explore choreography and movement for the dancer and camera, use formal and experimental ways of shooting, with improvisations, scores and storyboards. We will investigate how to capture the kinaesthetic, the emotional, authentic and concrete experience with the camera and finally amplify this with the “edit in camera” process. The workshop highlights the influence of postmodern dance practice as well as the cinematic genre of Dogme 95 and a non-linear filmic practice. Working in teams, each team will produce a 2-3 minute dance video. This may be an edit in camera process or if the participants have laptops and editing software may edit their own dance video. There will be a short module on “Documenting your performances & rehearsals”, uploading and using social media platforms to publicize, promote and share work.
Participants are asked to bring their own cameras, no matter what make or age and editing software, iMovie or FCP, if you have it and are interested in editing!
